smoking weed during pregnancy linked to psychotic-like behaviors in children, study finds

JAMA Psychiatry published a study Wednesday ,analyzed data on 11,489 children who were followed as part of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, which says it’s the « deepest and largest long-term study of brain development and child health in the Us. » The children’s cognitive and behavior patterns were evaluated in middle childhood, around age 9.


655 children were exposed to cannabis while in utero, according to mothers. Compared to 10,834 others with no exposure, those whose mothers had used during pregnancy had higher chance to have psychotic-like behaviors and more attention, sleep and social problems, plus a weaker cognitive abilities.
in case of not stopping to use after she discovered she was pregnant, the negative effects were more pronounced, the study found, and stayed after adjusting for confounding variables.

The US Surgeon General Jerome Adams issued a statement advising against the use of cannabis during pregnancy. « commenting about the increased use of weed during pregnancy ».
« It could affect the newborn’s brain development and result in poor cognitive function, hyperactivity, , and other long-term consequences.
